This is one of fifteen paintings in my Chakra Rainbow Oil Painting Series. Each painting depicts a state of balance or imbalance in the human energy field.
The Heretic represents an imbalanced crown chakra. A woman who doubts faith and instills spiritual fear. I did not paint this to glorify its darker concepts, but to help us recognize the necessity for doubt in a healthy way so that healing and universal light may flow through.
The guiding principal behind both the imbalance of the seventh chakra and The Heretic is the feeling of doubt and the criticism of belief. This painting represents one who has no faith of their own and attmepts to use fear and criticism to degrade belief. A figure floats in devil pose with burning scroll of religious symbols, using a sword as a crutch.
Shelley's paintings dance with unabashed honesty of the medicines and challenges of the human life cycle. Existential and contemplative, her work explores the net between psychology and spirituality. She discovers what each painting wants to say, translates it and offers her paintings as meditations on existence.
